Carol -- your post is too long to quote, but the instances you mention are what have put me in the 'bad vibes camp' where Hooper is concerned. I'm stopping short of saying he forged Lewis (as I'm trying out a new viewpoint) but he still exhibited some questionable behaviour.
For example, Hooper spends pages in Letters of C.S. Lewis justifying the changes he made in copies of Lewis's correspondence. Hooper writes: "If Warnie were still alive I believe he would consider all my corrections as pedantic, not really neceesary but not wrong either."
But Warnie wasn't still alive, and Hooper was conjecturing.
