…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.

So did Warnie Lewis ever comment on it? What does Doug Gresham say?
"I saw it begin,” said the Lord Digory. “I did not think I would live to see it die"

Carol -- your post is too long to quote, but the instances you mention are what have put me in the 'bad vibes camp' where Hooper is concerned. I'm stopping short of saying he forged Lewis (as I'm trying out a new viewpoint) but he still exhibited some questionable behaviour.

For example, Hooper spends pages in Letters of C.S. Lewis justifying the changes he made in copies of Lewis's correspondence. Hooper writes: "If Warnie were still alive I believe he would consider all my corrections as pedantic, not really neceesary but not wrong either."

But Warnie wasn't still alive, and Hooper was conjecturing.
