I think it's soft-ish, because doesn't he point out later, when talking to the sorns, that they don't pronounce the 'h' at the beginning of most words like the Hross do, making their speech less soft? So.. probably it would be silent, but not... kind of a whispery kind of sound at the beginning.

Yes, I agree. huh-NOW is how I always thought of it. When Ransom says he is a man, the Hross says "h'man." I get the idea that the "h" in their lanugage is sort of an aspirated article, like "a" or "the." This is a little tricky for us because English does not always preface things with articles like Spanish or French or Italian. Reminds me of an Italian friend I was with who got smiles by ordering a hamburger with "the pickle, the mustard, and the catsup." A Hross would say "h'pickle, h'mustard, h'ketchup."

I'm a "H-now"er too. But I'm not an exclusivist in my pronunciation. If someone comes along with a better one and can convince me that they're right, I'd be willing to change. :P

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.

His horse? What? If I remember correctly it was Bree who was in charge of the venture. (Or Aslan, but that's a little different... ;) )
