That Hideous Strength - Artwork

Postby Wood_Anemone » May 19th, 2009, 9:45 pm

Does anyone know the name of the artist, and the names of each of these art pieces? It may have been images from the mind of CS Lewis, but I have a friend who saw this art years ago.

The scene: Mark is placed into a room that is ill-proportioned; for example, the point of the arch above the door is not in the center. On the wall is a portrait of a young woman with her mouth open, and with her mouth full of hair. There is a picture of the Last Supper, distinguished especially by beetles under the table. There is a representation of a giant mantis playing a fiddle while being eaten by another mantis, and another of a man with corkscrews instead of arms.

Thank you for any help!!!

Welcome, Wood Anemone!

I've moved your topic to the forum dedicated to the Space Trilogy. There's a better chance of an answer to your question there.
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

I've never even seen an illustrated copy of THS! I must admit that all of the editions I've ever seen of each book have truly diabolical front covers tho .. my modern THS is especially bad. I have an old - not sure how old - edition of OOSP which has a really comical 'classic' sci fi cover, obviously done by someone who had no idea whatsoever what the book was about and couldn't care less either..

It would be good if the covers were diabolical as in creepy and demonic-looking, rather than what you mean, 'crap'. Ha, ha.
I saw one cover I liked but it's true that most of them are mediocre to just plain terrible.

LOL yeah. The cover of my latest edition of THS has Alcasan's head and ... well a few other things but I can't recall what. I remember thinking that on the plus side, the artist really HAD read the book and was faithfully depicting things from within the book.

On the minus side, the drawings were lousy.

Maybe not the OOTSP one so much. The Perelandra one is beautiful though

I always worried a bit about Mr Bultitude having killed men, actually :(. It just doesn't seem entirely 'right' to me. In fact the whole mass slaughter at the end always struck me as being deeply bloodthirsty.

Hi to all,

I'm just finishing up THS... Just the other night, I read the bloodthirsty scene, to use Jo's word. My question for Jo is how would you, if you were the judge, deal with men like Wither and Frost? I understand, and appreciate, that you are a peaceful Moose, after all, but if you were in charge of dealing out justice...?

As for the covers posted by Quangle Wangle, they are far better than those on my books. Let's see if I can successfully post this image from a blog called, "The Window in the Garden Wall..."

All three from 3 (Bodley Head - first edition, sadly very much later impressions).

I have set # 2, and set # 10, and also these two:
