Thus Quoth the Screwtape

Postby john » November 19th, 2004, 11:40 pm

In the heat of composition I find that I have inadvertently allowed myself to assume the form of a large centipede. I am accordingly dictating the rest to my secretary.

Anybody else have a favorite Screwtape line?

Well, that is the best line in the book, but this one is pretty good, too.

Even under Slubgob you must have learned at college the routine technique of sexual temptation, and since, for us spirits, this whole subject is one of considerable tedium (though neccessary as part of our training) I will pass it over.

Ah, that Uncle Screwtape, what a card...
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

The description of the patient's girlfriend; "a vile, sneaking, simpering, demure, monosyllabic, mouse-like, watery, insignificant, virginal bread-and-butter miss... She makes me vomit... We'd have had her to the arena in the old days." I'm reminded (only because I've recently been reading it) of the character of Hero in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing - I think she fits this description very well. Anyone seen Kenneth Branagh's film adaptation?

"Our cause is never more in danger then when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do our Enemy's will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys."

This quote has meant more to me then almost any other quote in Lewis' writings.

Amazon.Fr has some in French, I don't see Screwtape though.

I'm sorry I can't quote it accurately, but I liked the part where Screwtape describes the road to hell as a gradual slope, without any signposts.

Take Care,
