The Great Divorce

Postby Guest » March 17th, 2005, 3:56 pm

One of my all time fav's hands down is The Great Divorce. I have had some intresting discussions about how many chances we get to repent and how far God will go to redeem us. Any comments?

I love this book too! I think the problem is not so much how many times we are given to repent. Rather, most of the characters simply don't want to repent. They actually prefer their sin to being with God.

...[God] uses material things like bread and wine to put new life into us. We may think that rather crude and unspiritual. God does not: He invented eating. He likes matter. He invented it. - CS Lewis...Mere Christianity

The Great Divorce is one of the two books of Lewis that has touched me most deeply (and his whole body of writing means a great deal, indeed). We read it in our parish study group a couple of years ago -- and this became, it seemed to me, a profound spiritual experience. We discovered, all the sudden, that the standard liberal/conservative divisions were re-framed.

I, too, find the section on the Anglican bishop very engaging (and I am an Anglican [i.e., Episcopal] cleric).

Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

Sven, that quote from Phillips simply took my breath away. It was awesome! Thank you for finding it. :pleased:

I do not know that I ever saw anything more terrible than the struggle of that Dwarf Ghost against joy.
