Screwtape!

Postby Abdul Alhazred » November 4th, 2005, 10:18 am

Maybe there should be a separate forum for discussing Screwtape.

At any rate, I am not a Christian, but I love The Screwtape Letters.

So perfectly how it would be if it were true!

Lewis was a genius.

The Screwtape Letters were one of the first books by CS Lewis I bought although for the life of me I can't remember where I heard of it (possibly just the 'Net). It firmly cemented me as a CS Lewis fan I read it twice in two months when I first bought it. I also bought it for a friend and he loved it.

I haven't read it in some time, I really should read it again.

One of the best works he ever wrote!! Screwtape is a wonderful work, it was the third (after the complete CON and Till we have Faces) one I read. I still read it often and it makes me cold to see everything he paints (I'm Catholic) with the devil's advices. It's really amazing. It always brings me down and says: "Hey! Stop being lazy!" or something like that. That's why I like it, it helps me to pray (funny, huh?, but's true...)

I just started reading this....am about four or five chapters into it. Whoever said that about it making you less lazy, that is the truth, isn't it?? I think maybe I am the one in church with the ridiculous hat. Heh...either that or with uncontrollably frizzy hair.

With this book I have to read slow...I don't want to miss anything.

Lewis said that it was all too easy to put himself into Screwtape's shoes. That's probably true for most of us.
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

Well, I just finished this book, and I really loved. I don't even think that I have any original comment to make about it except that I am really grateful for guys like Lewis, who are a true gift to ex-apostates such as myself.

I was going to say something about the ending, but I realized that might be rude to anyone who has not finished it yet! *grin*

"Jill," said Tirian, "you are the bravest and most wood-wise of all my subjects, but also the most malapert and disobedient."
"By the Mane!" he whispered to Eustace. "This girl is a wondrous wood-maid. If she had Dryad's blood in her she could scarce do it better." - The Last Battle
