Ah ha! So, we westerners are only supplied one possible viewpoint of hell and those that will end up there. Is this what you are saying? Interesting. This whole concept is interesting. Now, in opting for the perspective as stated by David that hell is where people end up, not as a punishment but because it is what they are best suited for, who believes then that hell is not an actual physical plane? I was certainly embracing this new perespective and entwining it with my belief that hell is indeed a very real state of being that people who are not "suited to heaven" so to speak, will endure.

I guess you could sum up Divorce as, while Sartre once said "Hell is other people", Lewis is saying "Hell is yourself".

Then they came for the Iraqis and I protested because I was an American. Then they came for the Muslims and I spoke out because I was a Christian, Then they came for the poor and I spoke out because I was rich. By the time they came for me, I had all the support a man could ask for.”

The Great Divorce was the first Lewis book I read and it is still my favorite. It gave me hope when I was a hope-less adolescent.

And the praise section at the end of Perelandra is my favorite part of that book. I think it should be turned into an oratorio.
