Screwtape on Film

Postby Kanakaberaka » February 6th, 2007, 6:09 am

I just heard that The Screwtape Letters will be made into a film. It will be "mostly live action", which has me wondering if there could be computer generated Screwtape and Wormwood characters. Check it out at:

They've got guts if they want to adapt arguably one of the most unfilmable books in the world. I'd be very happy if they cast John Cleese as Uncle Screwtape. He already did an audio-book recording of The Screwtape Letters.

I wish they'd just leave it alone.

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.

The moral of the story is not to listen to those who tell you not to play the violin but stick to the tambourine.

I agree, Stanely, that it isn't necessarily impossible for an interesting and creative film to be made of Screwtape that could retain the creativity and freshness of Lewis's work without following the original format. But, as you say, it also would not be able to fit within a typical mainstream movie format, either. I guess in my cynicism I just can't bring myself to expect that from the producer of X-Men and Fantastic Four.

I really just long to know why they've chosen this book, out of all the others to be their next big experiment in cashing in on Christian movie-goers.... (I'm sorry... that was a terrible run-on sentence....) Screwtape Letters before... say... Till We Have Faces? Or even Out of the Silent Planet? I wouldn't necessarily jump for joy at any of them being made into film, but they would make a little more sense.

Why the Screwtape Letters?
It puzzles me exceedingly
