The Efficacy of Prayer

Postby matdonna » February 25th, 2007, 3:46 am

I know this piece sounds familiar though I don't know what volume it may be reprinted in offhand...what I was interested in was that it appeared first in the Atlantic Monthly in 1959

I happened onto it via an article in the getreligion blog:

'The Efficacy of Prayer' can be found in the collections The World's Last Night, Fern-Seed and Elephants, and that wonderful but hard to find omnibus Essay Collection & Other Short Pieces (the 1024 page hardback, not the 480 page paperback).
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.
