Prof Otto in The Problem of Pain

Postby dufflepod » April 9th, 2007, 7:56 pm

Hello all and Happy Easter. I am new to the forum and happy to be here.

Who is this Professor Otto that Lewis refers to on page 5 of The Problem of Pain? Does anyone know?

Thanks!

Welcome, Dufflepod!

Rudolf Otto, the author of The Idea of the Holy (originally, Das Heilige).

Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

And if I ask one more question: Why would Lewis refer to him as if everyone had read his works? Is it such a well-known book? It felt like it just popped out of nowhere as I was reading PP.

In 1940 England, amongst the audience Lewis expected to be reading The Problem of Pain, it wouldn't be 'out of nowhere'. If his readers hadn't read Otto's book, they were probably at least familiar with Otto's idea of The Numinous.
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking.

Otto is my favorite philosopher. Was introduced to him back in college. And when I first read Lewis' Problem of Pain and his mention of the Numinous I actually felt a bit intellectual...
