Screwtape letter #26: Unselfishness

Postby Michael Gaul » June 10th, 2007, 6:08 pm

In letter #26, Screwtape quotes a "sensible human" as having said "... She's the sort of woman who lives for others -- you can tell the others by their hunted expression".

Does anyone know whom he is quoting here? These things turn out to be tricky to find unless one actually knows something: the usual tack of resorting to an Internet search is thwarted by the fact that Screwtape is now cited as the source and the original is forgotten. Someone guessed Thurber but did note cite...

"I saw it begin,” said the Lord Digory. “I did not think I would live to see it die"

He's actually paraphrasing himself. In The Four Loves, the chapter 'Affection', the story about Mrs. Fidget.
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

A wrinkle in time

Ah, but perhaps you are trying to see if I am paying attention? Doesn't Screwtape predate The Four Loves by some years?

Your absolutely right. Pardon me while I hit myself with a fish!

*thwack*

Let me get back to you on this one...

Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!

Can I hit you with a fish too?

Could it be Oscar Wilde? It sounds like him, but I can't find the quotation anywhere...
