Help with Screwtape Letters Quote

Postby lightahead » July 14th, 2009, 6:44 pm

I heard a quote on the radio today from Screwtape Letters but have been unable to find the exact quote and wondered if someone could help me out. It was essentially: The most dazzling trick of Satan is to get people to worship him and think that they're worshipping God.

Thanks

Welcome, lightahead.

I don't believe it is a quote, but rather a paraphrase by the radio commentator of several of Screwtape's comments through out the book. Not a particularly good paraphrase, for the devils in the book aren't so much seeking worship of Satan, as worship of anyone/anything other than God. See the discussion of the Materialist Magician in Letter 7.
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.
