Screwtape Letters audio

Postby Michael » January 21st, 2010, 7:22 pm

Anyone heard any good audio versions? I just heard a BBC version I checked out from the library which was pretty good.

Anyone heard the Andy Serkis version? I would be curious to hear that.

If you can find it (and it's a tough find) the unabridged version done by John Cleese is prime.

Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

John Cleese as Screwtape? Hmm. I haven't heard it. It seems to me he would make it sound too funny. Screwtape is sometimes humorous, but it's also very serious.
Romans 5:8 "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

The pertinent phrase there is "I haven't heard it". With a small bit of googling, you should be able to find a sample of the recording out there on the 'net.

Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!

I'll be on the lookout for it. Even it is funny, the words are still the same,
"A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, 'darkness' on the walls of his cell."

The version done by John Cleese is very enjoyable and stays true to the text as far as I can remember. I've heard about the one with Andy Serkis, but from what I remember, it looked as if the producers of that version took some liberties with the way the text was presented. Still, hearing Serkis as Screwtape would be enjoyable.

The following link provides Cleese's version in six MP3 downloads for free. I've also looked at various locations on-line, in an attempt to purchase this version, but the cost was always exorbitant.
