Tree of Protection

What about to the tree of protection that Digory planted? Aslan said it would keep Jadis away, but in by LWW she was right in Narnia. What happened to it?

Aslan said the tree would protect Narnia for many years. I've always assumed that the tree eventually died, and that Jadis then re-entered Narnia.
"What are you laughing at?"
"At myself. My little puny self," said Phillipa.

That seems logical. It's a shame the Narnians didn't have the good sense to take seed from the tree, to plant saplings and eventually have a successor... it's a bit like the White Tree of Gondor.

On the plus side when it blew down in the gale at least Digory had the sense to turn the wood into a very fine wardrobe.
