tempter uses an appetite we have starved

tempter uses an appetite we have starved

I'm looking for a quote that goes something like the subject line.

"The tempter always uses an appetite which we have starved."

Thanks a million!

Hmm, struggling with this one. Obviously there are places in Screwtape where similar-sounding advice is given by the senior to the junior devil. And Lewis did say "Where men are forbidden to honour a king they honour millionaires, athletes or film stars instead: even famous prostitutes or gangsters. For spiritual nature, like bodily nature, will be served; deny it food and it will gobble poison."

D'you have any more words, context, clues?

I finally found it in "C.S. Lewis, A Mind Awake"

It reads, in full: "The tempter always works on some real weakness in our system of values: offers food to some need we have starved."

The citation is: 'Equality,' The Spectator, (27 August 1943)

Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.
