how it all began

Lewis once said that the Chronicles of Narnia all began with a picture does anyone know what this actually means?

It all began with a picture in his mind of a faun in a snow wood, carrying an umbrella and several parcels.

The picture came to him his school years and he kept it with him for a long time. When children came to live with him during World War 2 he decided to begin writing down the story of the picture. Or something like that. :)

Yes, the original LWW began with the pitcure of the faun carrying an umbrella, but the story could have been called "The Witch and the Wardrobe" at the time (1939).

The lion came bounding in from the closing chapters of Miracles, finished in 1947.

In my study of Lewis, I noticed that he often recovered from writing heavy theology or literary criticism.
