England a christian country?

England a christian country?

Postby Manfred » 16 Mar 2006, 10:51

I remember Lewis complaining about a spanish friend of Tolkien, who after seeing the names of the Oxford Colleges (many of which began with "st.") exclaimed "oh, so this was once a christian country?" Now I'm searching for this quote and can't find it. Have I just imagined it or does anybody know about it?

Manfred.

It's in a letter written to his brother, dated March 21st 1940. You can find it in the second volume of the Collected Letters.

I can never forget Tolkien's Spanish friend who, after having several colleges pointed out to him by name from the roof of the Radder, observed with surprise 'So this was once a Christian country?'

LOL so even back then, Christianity was on the decline in the UK!?
"I saw it begin,” said the Lord Digory. “I did not think I would live to see it die"
