Another quote seeker

Another quote seeker

Postby Laura » 15 Apr 2006, 11:51

I'm looking for a quote I heard somewhere and I can't find it now. It went a long the lines of " When I was a child I did childish things, when I became a man I put away those childish things, such as the fear of appearing childish, therefore able to believe in fairy tales again.... ???
HELP!
thanks
Laura

Isn't it in the preface to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe?

Not sure where it's from, but here's the quote:

When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

He is, of course, alluding to 1 Corinthians 13:11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

It's from his essay 'On Three Ways of Writing for Children', found in the essay collections Of Other Worlds, Of This and Other Worlds, and On Stories.
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

*shakes head in wondering amazement yet again at Sven's mastery of the Lewis canon*

It's a very good essay, too, if I remember it correctly.

There's a preface to LWW? What edition? I can't believe I haven't come across it before.

John is referring to the long dedication for LWW.
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
