Lewis Quotes

Postby Jack-fan » 15 May 2006, 22:52

Hey I'm working on a paper and would like to put in some really sweet quotes from Mr. Lewis... but I can't seem to find any other than the daily quoteon this site.

Could anyone point me in the direction of more or even share some of your favorites?

Thanks! :)

Surely the quotes would have to do with the subject matter of the paper - you don't want random quotes, do you?

Which of Lewis' works have you read?
"What are you laughing at?"
"At myself. My little puny self," said Phillipa.

There is some sort of site called brainy quotes or something like that. It has quite a lot of quotes from Lewis.

The problem is, that most of the quotes are entirely without references. I have a quote on tyranny that would round off an essay I'm working on perfectly, but I can't seem to find its source. I've searched the web, nothing came up. The best I could come up with was that it came from God in the Dock, so I bought the book, read it, and still cannot find a source for this quote. Does anyone know of a Lewis site that contains referenced quotations?

There is someone here who is astonishingly good at referencing quotes. If you post the quote, he (or someone else) may be able to identify it for you. :)

Welcome, Charie!

C. S. Lewis wrote:For the extermination of the Jews really would have been 'useful' if the racial theories had been correct; there is no foretelling what may come to seem, or even to be; 'useful,' and necessity' was always 'the tyrant's plea.'

God in the Dock, Part 2, the essay 'The Humanitarian Theory of Punishment', the very last sentence in 'A Reply to Criticism'.

Hope this helps.

Selah,
Sven
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

Am a little embarassed even to ask: there was a C.S. Lewis Quotation of the Day on the website just a week or two ago - about the danger of success when you are trying to be stupider than you are. Could someone help me, please, to find it again - I did not expect I will need it so soon!... :read:

Reep, the quote you mentioned (about making yourself stupider than you really are) is from The Magician's Nephew. It is where Uncle Andrew does not recognize that the animals are talking, because he has convinced himself that they don't talk.
"You can't go walking through Mordor in naught but your skin."
Put on the full armor of God.
