problem of pain quote

problem of pain quote

Postby Kolbitar » 30 Jul 2006, 20:18

Can anyone provide me with a couple of paragraphs from problem of pain where lewis speaks about huxley espousing self denial, and something about it being, indeed, an eternal gospel... something that Christianity helps soothe -- the section that has to do with all of these loosely put ideas?

Thanks...
The man who lives in contact with what he believes to be a living Church is a man always expecting to meet Plato and Shakespeare tomorrow at breakfast. He is always expecting to see some truth that he has never seen before. --Chesterton

It's in the chapter 6, 'Human Pain', about 17 pages in (page 103 in my edition).

C. S. Lewis wrote:...Mr Huxley expounds `non-attachment'. We cannot escape the doctrine by ceasing to be Christians. It is an `eternal gospel' revealed to men...
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

Sven, you are a total guru.
Are you memorizing all of Lewis's stuff just in case Ray Bradbury's firemen come for your books?
Have you made any progress on Chesterton's works?
