quote of the day

quote of the day

Postby A#minor » 20 Aug 2006, 17:09

We live, in fact, in a world starved for solitude, silence, and private: and therefore starved for meditation and true friendship.

This is one of the quotes in the quote of the day feature on the main page.
Where exactly is this from?
I love this quote. I feel starved for solitude. There are about 20 people in my house for the afternoon.
"My brain and this world don't fit each other, and there's an end of it!" - G.K. Chesterton

It's from essay Membership, collected in Fern-Seed and Elephants and Weight of Glory. It comes right at the end of the second paragraph, where Lewis is talking about how Oxford, when he arrived there, was full of intrusions on 'time alone'.
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.
