It's from essay Membership, collected in Fern-Seed and Elephants and Weight of Glory. It comes right at the end of the second paragraph, where Lewis is talking about how Oxford, when he arrived there, was full of intrusions on 'time alone'.
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
