C.s Lewis' Effect on Society

C.s Lewis' Effect on Society

Postby emma-duerre » 13 Sep 2006, 02:01

Hello! I have been assigned an essay on an author that changed society. I picked C.S Lewis, because I loved the Narnia books, but I need to justify my picking him. I know that he had an impact on society, and I sort of realize what it is, but I can't seem to be able to write it out and explain it. So, I was wondering if anyone could steer me in a general direction of a website that could help get my thoughts into some kind of order, so I can explain it properly.

Also, sorry if this kind of thing has been posted before. I've looked over the first few pages, but haven't found anything.

Again, any help would be much appreciated!

Have you looked in the Papers section? Lots of good help in there.

Lewis' "effect on society" seems rather broad to me, so I would suggest choosing a particular focus.

Since he was a scholar you could potentially write about the impact his scholarly works had in his field. He was also a popular writer and you could write about his contrbutions to literature...science fiction, fantasy, children's litereature, etc. Thirdly, you could write about his role as one of the most influential Christian apologists in the 20th century, if not the most influential. You could mention here not just his apologetics books, but the talks he used to give over the radio (which later became Mere Chrsitianity)...

My point is there are so many sides to Lewis, and thus so many ways you can write about how he has influenced society. I'm sure some people here might be able to think of more.

Also, I would read or at least skim thoroughly through a few biographies of Lewis. These would give you a birdseye view of his life so you can see who he was and what he did.

And I second A#'s notion of searching through the papers on this site.

Hope that helps,

You might zero in on his role during WWII, speaking on the radio and to groups in the British military (particularly the Royal Air Force). If I recall correctly, his purpose was to help shape the direction of post-war English society. You could examine whether or not he suceeded in that aim.
