Oh Novalis! Yes! I'm afraid the greatest prolonged exposure I've had to his writings are the prefaces to chapters in MacDonald's Phantastes. I've tried to look for translations online, but i'm stifled by handicap of not speaking German! What i have found tho is that he is so terribly ambigious!

This poor friend of mine has not had any exposure to the right authors or anything, so he doesn't even begin to understand this disease he is plauged with. He's a musician, a french horn player, and music is where he finds most of the sharp longing. He didn't even know that other people felt such things or were communicate them if they ever did, so we have some interesting discussions. Somehow they always end on a rather depressing note. Have you found this to be true in your experince? Should i be posting this in another forum?

You're welcome, votary

We prefer to leave the Q & A forum for short questions like your orginal post, and do any prolonged conversations in the other forums here on the Wardrobe. Please consider registering and starting a thread to discuss Sehnsucht, which Lewis called Joy. We've had threads on it before, but not lately, I think. Always a good topic.

Plus, if your friend is interested, we have some musicians here who may find common ground with him in a discussion of the specific feeling of music as Joy.

Oh, and Novalis? Personally I find him quite tedious. I doubt I ever would have read anything of his if not for the Lewis connection.

Selah,
Sven
