Narnia/C.S. Lewis Convention 2008

Narnia/C.S. Lewis Convention 2008

Postby Carl » 31 May 2007, 00:23

As there doesn't seem to be any other way to contact someone, I will post this here in the hopes of hearing back from the powers that be soon. :toothy-grin:

I am writing to you on behalf of two other Narnia forums - Narnia Web and The Dancing Lawn together comprising of some 10,000+ members. We have been in contact with Doug Gresham about holding a Narnia Convention next summer in Southern California. To be precise at Biola University. Mr. Gresham is very much in favor of having one.

We are proceeding to get permission for the convention from Disney, Walden Media and the C. S. Lewis Co. The convention tentatively to be held near the end of June 2008 if we can put it all together. If we get approval, then we hope to have several of the case and crew there as well. We have given letters to most of them and several have indicated in at least a positive light depending upon their own schedules.

We have numerous events planned for all ages. We were hoping that your group might be willing to participate with us in the endeavor. Our desire is to promote LWW, Prince Caspian and then Voyage of the Dawn Treader as well. Not only the films will be promoted but all of C.S. Lewis' works as well. It is our desire to make this convention one in which people from all ages will desire to attend, hopefully many families will decide to take their vacations at this time and not only come to the weekend convention but take in other places in Southern California as well.

If you are interested or are willing to at least let your membership know about this event if it gets the final approval, we would appreciate it. You are also invited to have a table, free of charge to promote your Narnia site and items you carry in your store that are Narnia related.

There will be an admissions fee for all thos attending to cover costs only. The amount to be determined later. Details of the event will be forthcoming if you desire to attend and us getting permission from the three organizations involved. Biola University has already indicated their desire to host the event. We have also sent out other letters and emails to a couple of other Narnia Fan clubs/forums asking them what we are asking you. We feel that the more backing we have, the greater the chances are of pulling this convention off.

Families will only be about 15 minutes from Disneyland, 30 minutes to Knotts Berry Farm, and 1 hour to San Diego Wild Animal Park/Zoo and Sea World. A great vacation area. Please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you.

Perhaps I'm just old and cynical, but this smacks more of commerce than it does of an homage to CS Lewis.

Ah, but there is a way to contact me. It's on the feedback link from the main page.

I will copy your post to the events thread in the C. S. Lewis forum.

Karen, I wouldn't be too cynical. I think it just might be a lot of fun! However, I wouldn't count on an Into the Wardrobe booth. We have nothing to offer but ourselves and our history as the very first web site devoted to C. S. Lewis (and one of the only ones that isn't immersed in the Narnia movie commercialism).

Slight correction

This convention is not being organised by Narniaweb which, as you may know, is a sister site to Into The Wardrobe.

I understand that this event is being planned by Narniafans members, whose discussion forum is called "The Dancing Lawn".

It would be misleading to suggest that Narniaweb will be in any way responsible for the event.

NarniaWeb is however involved. They have expressed a desire to be a part of the event and several of their members (mods) are serving now as Convention Committee Members. And as I said before Doug Gresham, depending upon his schedule, hopes to be there and is backing the event as well.

The convention is not, as I have already stated, there to just promote the films, but also to promote C.S. Lewis and all of his books as well, and the Lord as well. However one might feel about the films, they have done much to promote the Chronicles of Narnia books whose sales have risen due to the film(s), and many more are reading Mr. Lewis's other books as well.

Yes, NarniaFans.com had the idea of starting a convention, but it has always been the intent of TheDancingLawn forum to have the involvement of all C.S. Lewis' fans as well, and we would really like to have your group as a part of it. If any mature admin would like to serve upon the committee, we would welcome it. Your input is most welcome.

We did not start this to create any animosity between websites or forums, but please also understand that TDL does not only promote the film but the books as well as we have a whole section devoted to the books and another to C.S. Lewis the man.

Sorry for the double post here but I just wanted to post an email we received a few days ago from Tirian (David) at NarniaWeb:

"Thanks for your PM. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to the sites working together to pull this off. I think if it were to succeed you would want to pull in other Narnia fan sites as well like The Stone Table, The Lion's Call, Into the Wardrobe, etc... I like the idea of a unified Narnia fan conference.
The trick is, of course, getting enough momentum to create more momentum and entice movie stars and Gresham to come. I have my doubts that the community is big enough to support that, but I could definitely be wrong. You are the one with the passion for this so it's good that you are the one pursuing it!
I don't have a problem with you asking NarniaWebbers if they would like to join the planning committe. I think it would be better, though, if you approached specific folks rather than make a general request (which it sounds like you were planning to do anyway).
When it comes time to advertise, we can definitely talk some more about what we can do to promote this. Good luck!
Tirian (David)

I'll work on recruiting Vivian and Nina...maybe Paul and Katie...we'll see. They're all Southwest people too which makes it easy. Vivian and Paul are mods on NW which would make it easier. I gotta run. We'll all gab later. Blessings to yall!!!"

Since then Paul and Rachael who are mods at NarniaWeb have agreed to be on the formation committee for the convention if we can get the approval to go ahead.

So, if you wish to participate with us, just let us know. Although there are several of us from TDL that decided we would like to have a convention, it is not TDL run. We wish to cooperate with all Narnia and C.S. Lewis fans everywhere to bring this about.

In Christ

You are, of course, free to "recruit" the Wardrobians as you have been, but Into the Wardrobe, as an official organized effort, will not be attending nor participating in the convention.

I appreciate your candor about this and we will not pursue the convention with your group in mind further. I will only post additional updates as to the specifics of the con upon invitation from you to do so. You may contact me via my or Pastor Julie's email addies as previously posted.

Thank you for your time and we will miss your group being with us next June 20-22, 2008.

Oxbridge 2008

Postby retexan599 » 07 Nov 2007, 22:32

Just thought I would mention that the Oxbridge 2008 C.S. Lewis conference is planned for next summer: July 28th-August 8th 2008 in Oxford and Cambridge in England. Not sure it would be a conflict to a California Narnia convention, but it is in the same summer. Here is the URL for the Oxbridge conference:

Most people who can get to the one in England wouldn't be near enough to the California one, so I think it's fine.
You might prefer to start a new thread on the UK one though, to keep the two separate in people's minds?
John, do you still list events like these?

Yup, I do: http://cslewis.drzeus.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7242

I just need a brief write-up about it.
