quote from a C.S. Lewis tv special

quote from a C.S. Lewis tv special

Postby douginyork » 28 Jun 2007, 02:24

I was watching tv show on the life of C.S. Lewis and there was a quote which said basically. "A rival will cause any love to grow stronger, and there is no rival greater than death". I am looking for this quote if it is something Lewis stated. :??:

Kind regards,
Doug

Welcome, Doug.

It doesn't ring any bells with me, as stated or anything close to as stated. What TV show did you see it on?
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

I've never heard it, and I'm sceptical of Lewis saying it about his own life. But the place to start looking would be in Lewis's A GRIEF OBSERVED, and LENTEN LANDS by Doug Gresham (Lewis's stepson, Joy's son), and various versions of 'SHADOWLANDS' (by various authors, none Lewis).

Or Lewis might have said it about someone else's bereavement, such as Seldon van Auken(sp??) in A SEVERE MERCY. Or somewhere in his letters.

I searched A Grief Observed and a few other things found on the net with no luck. It could have been something paraphrased or added to fill dialog in the show. If you happen across this comment or know of the show in which I am thinking about please post a sugguestion. The show was mostly from his character reflecting on life. There were actors portraying all of the people whom he spoke of including his wife and two sons. Which is actually where I happen to turn to the channel.
Thanks for your help.

Perhaps it's from The Four Loves? I just read that again a few months back, and I don't recall that sentence, but it might be worth checking.

Reminds me more of one of Lewis's Medieval or Renaissance authors.
"The 'great golden chain of Concord' has united the whole of Edmund Spenser's world.... Nothing is repressed; nothing is insubordinate. To read him is to grow in mental health." The Allegory Of Love (Faerie Queene)

2 Corinthians IV.17 The Weight of Glory
