Hi Malcolm,

Charientocracy, in Lewis's essay, means something like "rule by the refined," I believe. That is, the cultured, the sensitive, the refined folks having their way with everybody.

That's just from a quick glane at the essay and a quick lookup of the Greek charientes, so somebody else may have more to add.

As best I can make out, a “charientocracy” is rule by intellectuals, the “cultured,” technocrats, scientists, or, in short, a humanistic elite under the sway of the notion that they know what is best for us.

Argh. . .the typo in the original post went unnoticed by me and explains why Google didn't return any matches. Shame on me.

Er, yeah. It does tend to help define a word when it's been spelled correctly. :)

Well, to be fair there *are* only nine returns with the word spelled correctly.

I'd say I got it pretty close from skimming Lewis's essay. And on my lunch break, too. :p

Hey, no worries. It's pretty excusable in such an unusual word! :)
