Profound Truths

Profound Truths

Postby Stanley Anderson » September 26th, 2005, 1:57 pm

(I'm putting this in the Christianity forum, but it is more properly a general philosophy question. As I look at the different forums and notice the "Consolation of Philosophy" study forum, I'm tempted to say that there ought to be something like a "Consideration of Philosophy" forum for questions of a philosophical, and yet not specifically Christian nature. But of course that would only add one more room to the already room-filled Wardrobe:-)

I recently ran across this statement by Niels Bohr, the "father of quantum physics": The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth."

Any thoughts? Any specific examples you can think of?

(edited to change "Neils" to the correct "Niels" -- let me see, I guess the "i" before "e" execpt after "c" applies to Danish names too:-)
…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.

I am both good and evil, and the light has no fellowship with the darkness. The good in me is elected and destined for life; the evil is the vessel destined for destruction. So my life will follow the pattern seen over and over in the Bible: God calls light out of darkness, order out of chaos, Eve out of Adam(?!), Seth out of Eve, Noah out of the Flood, Abram out of Ur, Israel out of Egypt, Mary out of Israel, Jesus out of the tomb. In short, a saint out of every sinner.
