[quote="Barbara"]Is smoking & drinking against God's Will?
There are many scriptures that can be quoted here, but for the sake of expediency may I simply say that God's Word (The Bible) teaches against bondage, and addiction is a form of bondage. It is generally agreed that nicotine and alcohol are addictive.
Alcohol CAN be addictive, yes (leaving nicotine aside for now) as can anything which is good in itself. It can also be healthy, pleasurable to the taste and productive of good spirits and sociability. For those who use rather than ABuse alcohol, being in bondage would consist in being told they're not allowed to drink. If I had to choose between legalism and licentiousness, I'd go for the latter every time.
As Al Pacino so aptly put it in The Devil's Advocate (he played the devil), at the end of the movie (where he loses, as we all know), he says, "Free will.....it's a bi...."
Not so. When we make wrong choices it is churlish to then blame God for giving us the ability to make them. I agree that we should exercise caution, but the very thing that makes the christian life exciting is that decisions are not extorted from us by main force. It would indeed be much safer if God had forbidden us to drink, but since He is not primarily concerned with us avoiding danger, He has left the matter up to us.
Free will is a wonderful thing: it's what sets us apart from the Calvinists
