Limits to the right to protest?

Limits to the right to protest?

Postby Melodee » March 2nd, 2006, 8:13 pm

Surely this would be a place to start? I can hardly believe that this could be allowed -- people protesting at soldiers' funerals with a message claiming that their deaths are the result of God's punishment for an America that embraces gays. It's hard to imagine a more perverse take on reality.

Oh wait your link already mentions the counter protesters. I gather what you are talking about is the so-called Christians there in the first place though :)

Now what else could God be upset about? How about divorce, infidelity, heterosexual promiscuity, porn, domestic violence, substance abuse, environmental degradation, abortion as convenience, isolation and abuse of the aged, greed, gluttony, laziness, exploitation of the poor, using people as machines, rampant consumerism, invading sovereign states on pretext, ummm, showing no respect at funerals...

These protesters might well be right about the 'judgement' bit, however. They've narrowed their focus far too much, tho. Perhaps Islamism is God picking up a big stick, saying "You've had this coming, you know, and you can't say you haven't been warned."

The trouble with Phelps and his gang is that they WANT to be assaulted .. they want the publicity and they get a kick out of people doing anything that can lead to litigation. I don't know what the solution is really.

I wonder what will happen to Phelps's church after he dies? It seems based on a cult of personality so it could be that they will just quietly drop into obscurity. And he's not spring chicken.

Marcus,

I dunno, though. I would not like to have the funeral of one of my loved ones surrounded by zillions of protestors and counter protestors and counter counter protestors and .. well, you get the picture. I would be deeply resentful of such people being there in the first place .. i don't know how close they are allowed to get but if it was close enough for mourners to see them, it would fill me with fury.

I don't know what the solution is. I agree with you that Phelps is seriously mentally ill and as such I wonder why he is free to roam society at all, frankly.

I wonder how many people will attend HIS funeral?
