I would argue, along with the rest of Tanakh/the Old Testament, that the Ten Commandments are pre-Christian or indeed non-Christian. Although Jesus uses the Ten Commandments in teaching, it is done in an interesting way—with regard to the rich ‘young’ man he only challenges him on those which are to do with his neighbour—which leads to the punchline of “If you still want to follow me, sell everything and give it to the poor”. He also overturns the idea of the sabbath being observed for its own sake: it is there for use not to be held up and idolised. Finally, in his use of the ‘Deuteronomic’ summary of the Law, there is a much more positive balance of loving God and loving others as you love yourself.
