Ten Commandments test

Ten Commandments test

How many of the Ten Commandments could you recite from memory? Do you think they are still revelant, or would you rather consider yourself a "New Testament Christian"?

Today I went to IKEA and hid in the wardrobes, and every time someone opened the doors I welcomed them to Narnia!!

I would argue, along with the rest of Tanakh/the Old Testament, that the Ten Commandments are pre-Christian or indeed non-Christian. Although Jesus uses the Ten Commandments in teaching, it is done in an interesting way—with regard to the rich ‘young’ man he only challenges him on those which are to do with his neighbour—which leads to the punchline of “If you still want to follow me, sell everything and give it to the poor”. He also overturns the idea of the sabbath being observed for its own sake: it is there for use not to be held up and idolised. Finally, in his use of the ‘Deuteronomic’ summary of the Law, there is a much more positive balance of loving God and loving others as you love yourself.

As Christians, we should be led by the Holy Spirit, rather than the law. BUT I can't imagine the Holy Spirit would lead us to break any of the 10 commandments.[/u]

Hmmm?

But as Christians we do by not setting the Sabbath (Saturday) aside. We can worship on any day, although Sunday is usually the main day.

Why on earth would there be any need for a return to Temple worship?

The clear message of Jesus, taking John’s words ascribed to him, is that wherever two or three gather together I am with them.

The importance of Jesus is to do away with everything that is restrictive—and that certainly includes the whole edifice and structure, physical and hierarchical of the Temple. The whole symbolism of the torn veil is completely wasted otherwise. Christians—followers of the Way—are people of the New Covenant and not the Old.
