Much U2's lyrics are actually nothing short of worship and Bono is very much a Christian. If you listen closely, nearly all of the songs are about God, Jesus, charity, etc. - but also they can be rather political. We used to play U2 tunes in the Vineyard church in the 90s, and it was offensive to some. It can be difficult to change one's paradigm, and tradition often drowns out anything innovative.

You know, the works of JS Bach were considered "too worldy" in his time.
