Mitchell & Dave: you are both in way over my head. It strikes that one of the major points behind the debate are kind of related to the question of whether things are the way they are (or are at all) according to some sort of necessity, or through the will of God. On the one hand, God's sovereigty seems to be constrained, and on the other, the creation and sustinence of creation seems to be arbitrary. I thought, given your backgrounds with Patristics and Aristotle, you might enjoy looking at the Summa - questions 103 and 104, on the governance of creatures.
