Dostoevsky's Notes is an excellent small novel to get a stream of conciousness sense of existentialism, Henry Czerny starred in a wonderful film adaptation of this novel. Here's the link for info on the film: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114005/

Knut Hamsun, a turn of the century author like Dostoevsky, wrote similar a similar novel to Notes called Hunger. Same wonderful sense of paranoiac, self-righteous diatribes.
