Richard Dawkins vs John Lennox

Postby postodave » November 16th, 2008, 11:06 pm

Dawkins never claims to be able to prove that God does not exist.
Ochams razor always has to be offset with the principle of comprehensivity. A theory must be the simplest one that will cover all the salient facts. In the case of God there is never going to be an agreement on which facts are salient. Is my experience of God a salient fact? - it may be to me but it cannot be to you.
Although people like to talk about objective evidence, evidence is that which makes evident and there must be someone to whom it makes something evident. As Polanyi says knowledge is not subjective or objective but personal. That is what makes these debates so interesting and ultimately so frustrating.
We can get a large measure of agreement on where a set of scientific evidences is pointing but there is no logical path which can lead from evidence to truth as long as the thing to which the evidence is pointing cannot be directly encountered. So the judgment that a theory is true is always a personal judgment.

Hey Lioba,

To end a quote, you need to put
at the end. You can put this anywhere in the quotation and it will end it, which is helpful if you just want to highlight a little bit of what someone else has said.

The quote should begin with
or, if you want it to start with someone's name,
You can also use the quote function when replying to help with this. It's at the top of the 'Reply' box. Click it once at the beginning of the bit you want to quote, and once at the end of quotation. It will do the tags for you. Hope this is helpful.

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.
