That's very interesting, Adam. In Judaism, if you don't already have a Hebrew name, you are given one or choose one to use when you go through any of the big ceremonies (bar/bat mitzvah, marriage, conversion, etc.) When I got married, my middle name was Deborah (Devorah), so that worked. My husband, who is from a very assimilated family, had to pick one (he used his father's middle name, Benjamin - Binyamin).

In a Reform Jewish congregation, during the parts of these ceremonies conducted in Hebrew, the participants are called "X, son/daughter of Y and Z", and the Hebrew names are used. However, during the English parts, the person's given name is used, so everyone understands who's getting married. :wink:
