I love that joke. My friend told it to me on the phone, and I was laughing so hard she thought I was choking on something. (I tend to laugh inaudibly after a while, while fighting to breathe) I had no clue Tolkien wrote it. Is it confermed? I would feel bad spreading that sort of rumor if it wasn't.

I'm sorry, but I completely forget where I got that from. I wrote it down in my quote book as simply "A joke by Tolkien", not thinking, in my innocence and ignorance, that someday I would want the source. Shame on me.

Maybe you could google it and find the book that I copied it from.
If so, then let me know, so I can write it down properly.
I'm glad it gave you a good laugh anyway.

I've been reading all the threads on the Tolkien forum this morning, and have just read this one for the first time.

Wheee! I love it!!

At first I thought it was referring to a small item of furniture confused with ladies' panties, and then realised it was only about the panties. (bloomers, undies, knickers.... whatever - in those days they usually covered partway down one's legs for warmth - hence the reference to length).

I never thought of Tollers as a knicker-joke writer before! I knew he had an earthy, hobbity sense of humour though.

Tokens get you on the subway. You buy a token and put it in the slot to get into the subway. It's a stupid joke, I know.

Oh wait, sorry. Are you saying you don't understand the joke that Tolkien wrote?
Ah, well. He bought her underdrawers, panties, underwear. What could be more funny?

Oh, ok thanks. I just presumed 'drawers' meant the wooden things that slide into cupboards. I've got it now. Thanks

Very clever joke! I was discretly laughing hard, since I'm still at work, I sent it to my reading group of friends sicne they all love Tolkien too, and I'm almost sure they didn't knew he was such a naughty boy, LOL.

I didn't knew before that back then drawers meant a different thing than now, but I sort of figured out what it meant when I continued reading the joke, and then I confirmed it with everyone's elses comments :D

I also loved the last joke you submitted A#minor

Thank you so much for posting this! We acted this out as a skit at an old persons home. I'm not sure they got all of it...some of them may have been sleeping....but everyone who understood what was going on really loved it! :toothy-grin:
