I noticed that when Niniel/Nienor is married to Turin (eeewwww :p ) she conceives and becomes wan and sad. So where's the child? There's no child mentioned. She must have still been pregnant when she committed suicide?
Maybe that's all for the better.
Why do you think Tolkien added such dark material as a brother/sister marriage? That's gross. He had no sister so he maybe wouldn't realize how gross that is. blagh. yuck, I can't talk about it anymore.

In contrast there are some lovely moments, such as when Hurin finds Morwen just before she dies and says, "She was not conquered". That's such a sad, but beautiful passage.

So why would Tolkien write such awful things? Just to contrast with the lovely things?

Somehow this painting and the story behind it just fascinate me.
Glaurung's stare is just so evil, and there's poor Finduilas being led away while Turin is helpless to save her.

Interesting quotes, Adam. I've never read the Histories, but I'll have to delve into them one day.
One has to wonder what more Tolkien would have written had humanity been granted a longer life-span. Although he never does write about religion in Middle-earth, there are very subtle undertones throughout all his works, just b/c of the predominance of (I hate to say religion so I'll say) a relationship with God in his life.
If God is in your life, He spills over a little into everything.
But I do agree with you that it doesn't do to draw too many conclusions or to attribute every virtue or sin to a religious background.
