The National Review website has just posted a copy of the obituary of Tolkien the magazine published in 1973.

Thanks for the link to a thoughtful and informed article. I especially like its emphasis on placing Tolkien in the broader context of English literature. The only thing that I would have put differently was its reference to TLotR as a "Christian parable." While notably "non-religious," TLotR is indeed charged with spiritual significance. And one frequently encounters in it possible Christian allusions. But certainly it is not, as Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia frequently are, a re-casting/re-telling of Christianity.

But thanks again for the article; it's one to keep, to be sure.

And Tolkien returned to England at the age of 3. I don't think he remembered much of Africa.
