Tolkien's Use of Magic

Postby Herald » February 13th, 2006, 3:42 am

Tolkien claimed that the magic present in his work wasn't really magic at all, but magic was the best word to describe the realm of influence possessed by the otherwise magical characters he concocted. If this is true, why then did Gandalf speak of spells he'd casted or incantations spoken? Could someone better clarify magic in Middle-earth and beyond?
