Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.

Then they came for the Muslims and I spoke out because I was a Christian, Then they came for the poor and I spoke out because I was rich. By the time they came for me, I had all the support a man could ask for.”

Welcome Jimbo! Even if you are a film detractor ;) (Stan must think all his Christmases have come at once!).

I am with Faramir at the, erm, whatchamacallit behind the waterfall now. Again, this is one of my favourite parts of the books that was messed up in the films. I like the sudden contrast between the gates of Mordor and Ithilien .. to go from what seems total hopelessness to a fair land where green things still grow and men eat and drink and ... well, certainly not make merry I guess but it has a homelike feel to it.

Yeah the Mouth of Sauron scene was badly done too .. what was all that loping his head off about?! I am sure that that would simply not have been done .. it breaks all known codes of chivalry and wartime conduct etc etc.

First, thanks for all the warm welcomes. Glad to be here!

Jo, you are just flying through your reading! A true readathon, they shall write songs of this...

Speaking of songs, it made me chuckle to read Gimli's response to Aragorn's and Legolas' tributes to Boromir. (And by the by, I am reading these songs for the first time - I used to skim them - and they are amazing.) Gimli's response: "You left the East Wind to me, but I will say naught of it." Do you think that Gimli just isn't a singer/songwriter and that this was his way out of it?

As for the readathon, I'm with Gandalf and the boys as they are about to enter Meduseld. I'm going at a snail's pace here but I only have about a half an hour of reading before I fade into unconciousness. What a great way to fall asleep though.

But to jump ahead where you all are, what did you think of Faramir in the movies? I mean aside from the obvious detour to Osgiliath travesty.
