I think someone started to write a paper awhile back about the master to servant relationship of Frodo and Sam, comparing it to a batman's service in the Wars.
Yes, it is. There's quite a lot there about that subject. Maybe we should resurrect that thread.

I read that link you gave us, Jimbo, and started crying. I can't imagine the horror of those trenches. Well, no, actually, I'm crying b/c I can imagine that horror. What I really mean is that I can't fully realize it, of course.

I had never thought before of the connection between the pits in No-Man's Land and the Dead Marshes. The picture shows a striking similarity. I don't think I'll ever read those chapters the same way again.

I fully agree about the move from Philia to Agape in Sam and Frodo's relationship. Tolkien's understanding of God comes out through his writing at every turn.

Sorry to have let this grind to a halt .. I am still wallowing around in Minas Tirith :). I am not looking forward to the final push across Mordor .. I just don't like that bit for some reason. I hate knowing what will happen at the end and i hate to see Frodo's suffering so I am dragging my feet before getting to it.

I could just skip it of course but that would be cheating :)

You're not past the "Black Gate" bit with Shagrat and Gorbag, are you? That's one of my favourite parts, for some reason.

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.
