It is Gildor, but not in the Old Forest -- it's the forest in the Shire the hobbits pass through before they get to Crickhollow, described as a 'wood of ancient oak-trees'.

I don't know how you do this without looking it up!! *admiring glance*

OK, here's one:

Ah yes, this is from "The Choices of Master Samwise" (Two Towers ch. X), where Sam is trying to keep Shelob from Frodo.

Now try this easy one:

Young she was and yet not so

"Young she was and yet not so" -- part of the description of Arwen when Frodo first sees her in Rivendell, in "Many Meetings" in FOTR.

New quote:

Yet now that I have leave to depart, I would remain.
"What are you laughing at?"
"At myself. My little puny self," said Phillipa.

Is that about Shadowfax?

I was being coy (or perhaps cheeky).

Any possibility of giving a speaker, chapter or situation?

The words are being spoken to Gandalf...

I'll take your first answer, which is CORRECT! It was Pippin. Book 3, chapter 11, "The Palantir". Give us quote Jo.
