OK, just to keep the ball rolling, here's an easy one:

"Sheep were bleating in flocks."

I recognised the sheep were bleating in flocks one instantly but only cos it's part of my all time favourite passage of the book.

I think that Adam's is by Fangorn when what remains of the company are looking for the hobbits?

I assume that that's about Gollum and my guess is that it would be Frodo to Faramir.

It was a little sooner after Gollum's (seeming) disappearance, and the speaker wasn't Frodo.

Aragorn at the Council of Elrond? That was my second guess

No, you were much closer before. It is in reference to Gollum, but he only disappears for a very short time.

Hmm actually I think it is Sam. But I dunno where.

Do I get brownie points for persistence?

Mmmmmm, brownies.

Oops, sorry. Got a little sidetracked there. Yes it was Sam after Gollum had disappeared for a few hours. Have you found your book to give us a quote?

No. But I will give you a quote anyway.

"Having sung his song he would say no more"

Oh all right, then. It's Gimli in Fellowship "A Journey in the Dark".

Next quote:
Were I permitted, in this dark hour I would choose the latter.
