Ink Blob?

Postby A#minor » April 5th, 2006, 9:14 pm

Hey, does anybody have the Houghton Mifflin edition of The Hobbit that has Tolkien's original illustrations on the dustjacket and the hardcover is blue?

Well, on the side of the hardcover (not the dustjacket), there's a silver blob. What is that? It looks a little bit like a dwarf's pointy cap, or maybe it's just an ink blob.

I believe you're describing the design on the 6th thru 14th printings of the second edition (all but the far left here):

According to , it is "...the dwarf's hood emblem on the spine...".
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

Yes, that's it exactly! So it is a dwarf's hat. Heh. Well, now.
Many thanks, Sven! :D

Sven, is that a photo from your personal library?

No, it's from the link that he gave me. Wouldn't that be awesome if he owned all those copies of the Hobbit?!
