It's not an Allegory for the Eucharist, since Tolkien abhorred "allegories", but I think it may very well have been a deliberate "applicability", as he would have called it. Isn't there some mention of lembas in the Silmarillion, too? :read:

Being Protestant, I can't really compare, but that is an interesting application.
I would compare it more to the Word of God in that the more we rely solely on God's Word for spiritual sustenance the more powerful it is in our lives.
