Little House of Lost Play

Postby surprisedbyjoy » July 20th, 2006, 12:10 am

Can anyone quote Tolkien's poem "The Little House of Lost Play" for me?

Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.

Doesn't the suffix -esque suggest something which is similar to the root word, but not completely identical to it? So something which is Tolkienesque would be somewhat similar to Tolkien, but not Tolkien itself. (I might say that Brian Jacques' writings are Tolkienesque, i.e. resembling some of Tolkien's writings in content or style.)

On the other hand, Tolkienian carries the connotation of anything directly involved with Tolkien, his life or writings, i.e. Example given by Adam Linton.

Just a thought.
