The Hobbit Trilogy!?

Postby Michael » April 1st, 2009, 9:47 pm

Interesting tidbit from Theonering.net:

The Hobbit...TRILOGY?!

For a few months now, we've all been wondering why there's been such a cloud
of secrecy from Guillermo and PJ regarding progress on The Hobbit. Well,
today we got wind of what could be the biggest story so far about this much
anticipated film: a report that negotiations are under way for a third film!

On condition on anonymity, our source revealed that some of the main
sticking points include amendments to PJ and GDT's contracts requiring an
additional 3 months of principal photography, and temporarily suspending
some of their other projects.

Our insider also mentioned some legal wrangling with the Tolkien Estate to
acquire additional rights to materials not currently under license which
would provide the bulk of the plot for the third movie. What specifically
this could be is a guess, but our source seems to imply delving into the
back-story of the Istari (Wizards) including Gandalf and Saruman's youth in
Valinor. The inclusion of other young wizards at the academy would provide
an opportunity for cameos from LOTR actors who's story arc doesn't fit into
The Hobbit. The latter would go a long way toward explaining recent cryptic
quotes from LOTR actors about possible appearances in The Hobbit.
"A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, 'darkness' on the walls of his cell."

Interesting. Thanks for the update. I'm not a Tolkien expert - I pretty much stick to the LOTR trilogy. Tried The Silmarillion once but didn't make it. Anyway, I didn't realize there was a wizard academy. Is that what Valinor is? Kinda takes away some of the mysticism surrounding Gandalf.

"Well," said Pooh, "what I like best -- " and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn't know what it was called.

There is NO "wizard's academy" in Tolkien. No Roke, and not even any Hogwarts. Gandalf and Saruman are Maiar, i.e. second-grade angels (after the Valar, who are the Archangels). They would not need any education in "wizardry", whether magia or goetia.

But then what did Tolkien know?

PS: I'm told that this was just an April Fool's. I do hope so!
