The Gray Wolf

I have just read The Gray Wolf by George MacDonald again. That's at least the 5th time, if not the 6th or 7th, and it always totally pulls me in and fascinates me, but I have no idea why. I love a lot of MacDonald's short stories, but with the rest I can at least semi-articulate what draws me to it and why I enjoy it. Not so with TGW. The best I can say is that it has something to do with the animal, base nature within the human... and that is part of it, but that just seems a weak explanation. Does anyone else like this story? Do you know why?
