When I learned English in school, mxy teacher was an absolute fan of the British English, so using American English was something like committing a crime. Later they told us we should stick to either American or British English, and so I used the American English, writing color instead of colour and labor instead of labour, but somehow people always thought I had just mis-spelled the word. I thought it was kind of funny that the Bristish English was supposed to be the better one, especially by older teachers.

Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.
